Master Thesis Procedure

  1. You are allowed to start with 5LP courses open! Caution: Visualization, Regression and ML 1 have 6 LP! M10 has 7LP!
  2. In your 3rd Semester you are planning your Master Thesis early! You find a professor and discuss the topic with him.
  3. If the professor agrees, you normally write a good Exposee (see below) with your plan, timetable, the structure of the thesis (1-2- levels deep), an architecture picture, etc.
  4. Then you fill out some forms. One for the topic with the name of the advisor, the title, some tags (ML, Data Science, etc.) and let the advisor sign this. The second one has the open courses you have. You can have at most x courses / y ECTS open to apply for the master thesis. The forms can be found here (ToDo: Add links)
  5. Then you formally apply in the semester before you want to write your thesis by passsing the docs to our FB VI secretary!
  6. In non Corona times you will wait 1-3 months for the exam board to reply with a letter containing the start and the end date for your thesis! In Corona times you might wait longer! Please take this into account and apply as early as possible. This letter by Beuth will also include the randomly choosen second reviewer prof.
  7. In case of an industriy topic, the second supervisor can be from the industry. But mostly it is better to leave the supervisor out of the forms and just have two profs as formal final report writers! So the industry person can be a time flexible advisor (even noted on the Title Page) but must not be in the BHT paperwork cycle.
  8. Then you write your thesis for 5 months (see StuPrO in the doc section!)
  9. Please note that an extension of this time is not possible unless a doctor confirms serious health issues! You should assume 2 weeks of sickness in your timeline.
  10. Please also note that BHT Profs are not allowed to sign NDAs! BHT and the Berliner Senat can not be entangled in legal actions here because money is not available. Nevertheless we like to help Berlin / Companies and have better things to do then stealing code or data...

Please translate this link, this link, and find all the docs here!

Please note that applications for admission to the final examination must be submitted to Studienverwaltung. Only annex 2 must be submitted to the Fachbereichsverwaltung FB VI.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When are the deadlines for the Master Thesis?

For next SummerSemester: Apply till 13.February
For next WinterSemester: Apply till 30.July

(see https://www.bht-berlin.de/197)

  • If we find a thesis topic in a company, can we start the thesis even before getting the approval from the university or do the company usually waits until we get an approval from them? That is we start the topic already but register it later in the university?

No. This is not a good idea. First you need to have a Prof which agrees to the topic. Find the prof, agree on the exposee. Then you are 90% on the safe side, that the examination comitee will also accept the topic! Hence, start early with your negotiation / proposal for the professor.

  • If we write the thesis in a company, do we need to register the company supervisor? And what education grade must he have?

There is no duty to register the company supervisor. Sometimes it might be even better to omit the registration and just have two Beuth Profs because the second supervisor then also needs to write the final report which is time consuming. But if he / she likes to write the final assessment report: fine. Take her / him in.
